Dragonflies have been around for around 325 million years. Their prehistoric ancestor had wingspans of approximately 30 inches. This creature is considerably smaller today ranging from 1-6 inches. There are about 3012 different species of Dragonflies and they can be found all over the world, except in Antarctica. They are a popular symbol for art and jewelry, used in traditional medicine in China and Japan and used as food in Indonesia. To the people of Japan they symbolize happiness, courage and strength, but have a sinister reputation in European folklore.
According to myth dragonflies were once thought to have once been dragons and if you look closely at their armored bodies you can see why our ancestors may have thought so. Of course people also thought that dragonflies had teeth, which they don't. However, they do have very strong mandibles. If you get a chance to sit and observe one you can actually hear their jaws snapping together as they catch insects. The Dragonfly symbolizes transformation, illusion and the ease of adapting to life and it's changes. These changes take root in our mental and emotional maturity and help us gain the understanding of life's deeper meanings. When dragonfly shows up it's message is "It's your time to transform to a new level. Look beyond illusion and gain insight into the deeper aspects of life." These flexible and adaptable creatures teach us to be light in spirit and if you find yourself stuck and in need of new perspective then embrace your ability to adapt and find a new angle to attack the issue. As a guide Dragonfly helps us along the path of transformation. This magical creature teaches us that things are not quite what they seem and illusion is both good and bad. On the up side the application of illusion can help us find new, creative solutions to questions or issues. However sometimes we use illusion to hide things that don't have the courage to face and deal with or that no longer work for us. If this is where you are now Dragonfly is asking you to dispel those harmful illusions and allow yourself to transform. As a totem spirit Dragonfly is perfect for people who flit around from one thing to another. He teaches us that taking time to ground and sit still is essential for balance. Dragonfly is also a good helper for those who connect deeply with nature and nature spirits. Gardening and plants are also in his realm. It represents eternal life and in many ancient carvings Egyptian deities and Pharaoh's are shown holding it. While the origins of the Ankh are unclear, archeologists say that in the ancient language the word means quite literally "Life". One theory as to the symbol itself says that the loop on top represents the womb (feminine) while the cross at the bottom represents the penis (male) and when the two are put together life is formed from it. It is also said to symbolize the elements of both water and air. In pagan traditions these element are considered life giving. When the Ankh is used as an amulet it is believed to give the wearer good health, longevity and protection against evil and negative energy. These products can be found here: Belly Dance Bling |
